7 Day Detox Diary

Sometime at the end of April I came up with the crazy idea to do a detox diet program, take it seriously, and hold myself accountable every step of the way. I did some research and found some pretty good information on doing a full body cleanse. I figured this diet fit my situation perfectly since my healthy eating habits were going downhill due to lack of focus, lack of time, and stress. The detox is a reset button for my body, providing me with discipline to reject certain foods, a stop to chronic headaches/migraines, and a fresh start to eating healthy again. I purchased the Complete Body Cleansing 7-Day Program from GNC for around $40. It wasn’t really my first choice but I stumbled upon the store while I was on the way to Lush. I saved a few dollars by joining the GNC Membership Program so it all worked out.

By keeping a diary and logging my day to day struggles and bliss with this program I am holding myself even more accountable by posting my journey for the next 7 days to the world. The entries will talk about how I feel, what I ate, what I like or don’t like about the program, any issues, any noticeable differences, etc. I will type my entries on this same post every night until the 7 days are complete. 

What I wish to accomplish when the program ends:

Stop craving junk

Get rid of the junk I already ate

More energy

Flatter stomach

Clear and smooth skin

More energy

Better meditation and focus

What if I don’t notice any change in the next 7 days? Welp they have a 14 day program too. If at first you don’t succeed…..you know the rest.

Day 1 Sunday May 4, 2014

Recovered from a headache around 8 am and got out of bed finally to take my third excedrin pill. After feeling a little better close to 10am I started the program. I mixed the pack of fiber powder in a glass of water with raspberry lemonade drink mix (no sugar or caffeine in these). The fiber powder is super duper thick. I also ate a banana. Then I took the 4 giant AM pills one at a time. I wasn’t hungry after that thick fiber mix so that was it for breakfast. Throughout the day I can pretty much feel the changes going on inside my stomach. Is it just my imagination? It felt very weird not sure how to explain it. For lunch I ate Trader Joes chicken fried rice ( I decided to keep eating chicken since my options were so limited). I expected my first bowel movement (sorry to be so sharing but this part is important) to be a little bit more dramatic today but it was nothing different. My energy level was very low and I didn’t feel like doing anything. I figured maybe it was because of how I was eating or maybe I wasn’t eating enough. I tried eating almonds but it wasn’t helping so I put them in a sandwich bag for work tomorrow. For dinner I ate shrimp salad first then later I had some plain kale and detox tea which was really soothing for my stomach. I forgot to take the pills while I was eating dinner so I just popped the PM pills and the probiotic pill with a glass of water soon after. Then all of the water I drank started to catch up with me so I spent every 20 min in the bathroom through 11pm. So in conclusion day 1 sucked. Rough start. Day 2 Monday May 5, 2014

Today was a lot better. It seemed like my energy level was a bit higher although I didn’t get up at 5am to head over to yoga class. I’m trying to get to bed early so I can go tomorrow morning. I ate granola, pineapple, and a banana for breakfast. I remembered to take the fiber packet and am pills but I was rushing and had to gulp down the fiber at work with a cup of water instead of a green smoothie. I seemed very gassy throughout the day. I hope that is normal. My dilemma occurred after lunch. I was not eating enough and I was still hungry after eating a piece of baked chicken and kale. I had to settle for sunflower seeds and two granola bars out of the vending machine. Everything else had way too much sugar or too much salt. I decided to go back to grocery store and buy more food in order to keep the momentum going these next five days. For dinner I had some kale and detox tea. I took the pm pills and probiotic pill with water. Another day of detox down. Wish me luck. The struggle is real. Thanks for reading.

Day 3 Tuesday May 6, 2014

This post will be short and sweet because I have been typing up a paper and cooking and now I’m getting tired. Today I noticed my cravings were a little bit more under control. I also noticed just how much unhealthy food is in my surroundings at work. It’s everywhere no wonder I have a weak discipline. Energy level started out pretty good then went downhill as the day went on. I was also bloated and gassy towards the end of the day not sure why. Anyway I had strawberries, french vanilla granola, and a banana for breakfast with detox tea then water with the fiber packet and AM pills. Snack was a shrimp salad and detox tea again. Lunch was chicken and kale. I’m starting to get sick of kale so I need to go buy more brown rice as a replacement. Dinner was a banana and PM pills/probiotic pill. I made roasted potatoes for breakfast tomorrow. I also want to make oatmeal. I have one more lunch meal prepped with the same ol chicken and kale. I’m hoping tomorrow will be a breeze. P.S. I still haven’t worked out yet. Needed to get the school stuff out of the way. Tomorrow through Saturday I go hard. Goodnight and thanks for reading Zzzzz

Day 4 Wednesday May 7, 2014

I am exhausted I just got back from yoga class. Don’t get me wrong though my body feels amazing! Anyway here’s the gist of the day:

I was very full and satisfied after all of my meals which means I packed enough food for work this time. Score!

Breakfast: french vanilla granola, pineapples, potatoes, water with fiber packet and AM pills

Snack: Shrimp salad

Lunch: Chicken and kale

Snack: Oats and honey granola bar

Dinner: Kashi cereal with almond milk, PM and probiotic pills

Not to be graphic but I am definitely feeling “cleansed.” I spent a lot more time in the bathroom today. Thanks for reading. I’ll try to make tomorrow’s post more interesting.  

Day 5 Thursday May 8, 2014

This day was very busy so I’m late updating. Thursday was alright as far as cravings and appetite but I was going through some really bad stomach bloat that I needed to get to the bottom of. It was bad.

Breakfast: Granola, banana, pineapple, AM pills, and fiber packet

Snacks: shrimp salad, later on a granola bar

Lunch: Chipotle bowl with chicken, fresh tomato salsa, guacamole, corn, and a teeny bit of cheese (I just couldn’t help it I freakin love cheese ok don’t judge me)

Dinner: None because I was still full from chipotle (went out and forgot the PM pills and fiber packet smh)

Day 6 Friday May 9, 2014

Today was my best detox day. First off I went to Smoothie King (I was running late & had no time to make a smoothie of my own) and got a kale, apple, and kiwi green smoothie with an energy enhancer. I took the AM pills with water but decided not to take the fiber pill. Soon after I had the energy I needed and my stomach felt just fine. I honestly feel like the fiber packet was a bit too much for my stomach. It’s a lot of powder to use in one drink. I think that might have been the reason my stomach would sometimes feel like a huge balloon about to pop. For lunch I had shrimp salad (as you can tell my favorite meal this week). For dinner I tried some mango chicken and broccoli at this healthy thai restaurant and took the PM pills. Stomach still feels settled and at ease. Tomorrow is my last day on the 7 day detox diet. I will post my conclusions, thoughts, etc on tomorrow’s post.

Day 7 Saturday May 10, 2014

I knew today was going to be the last day on detox so I wanted to make sure I ended it right and prepared myself for the post detox by going to the grocery store. Doing this for 7 days has taught me a lot and I decided to actually continue eating this way (are you surprised). There was only one food type that I had the most trouble staying away from and that was cheese. Shocking. I never realized how much I love cheese. I am going to try another brand of vegan cheese ( I had such a bad experience with vegan cheese but I heard the brand Daiya is really good) and see how that works out. It seemed as though the detox me feel a lot better towards the end of it. I was expecting immediate changes but it definitely took time for the cleanse to kick into high gear. I’ve had a long day and super tired so I will come back and add in the rest of my thoughts and conclusions later.
